This takes place in The Lost Land, a different dimension in which all the stuff the developers thought up and didn't want to abandon could co-exist, and you must fight your way through many enemies, to finally rescue the world. I only found out about the comic book(and have not read it) after completing the game, but I understand that they have little to do with each other.
